You don’t have to wait for the next Culture Crawl to support our city’s emerging artists. Some of the very youngest of them are displaying their work right now as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
“The Spirit of Place” exhibition features 75 images created by young artists from British Columbia. Under the guidance of alumni from Emily Carr Institute, the students produced artwork that evoked culture, sport and sustainability in the province.
I had the pleasure of photographing the opening reception, which was held Thursday night on Granville Island. The exhibition was sponsored by Emily Carr, Arts Umbrella, Save the Children Canada and the Cultural Olympiad. It can be viewed through March 8.
The artwork can also be seen online at the SpiritofPlace.eciad.ca website, which was designed by our friends over at Pica Interactive.

Winterruption Helps Vancouver Beat the Blues

Artists, musicians and performers of all kinds filled Granville Island during the weekend for the Winterruption festivities. As its name suggests, the celebration was meant to bring some warm feelings and enthusiasm to beat the winter blahs. It helped that the weather cooperated, making things seem more like spring.
Hopefully, Winterruption will come to mark the end of the cold and rainy days rather than a respite from them. I had the chance to get out there and shoot as part of another assignment on Granville Island. Now, I can’t wait for summer!

UBC Boathouse a Merry Place for Vancouver Wedding Celebrations
February 21, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The UBC Boathouse rises up from along the Fraser River. (Julia Pelish Photography)
As part of my scouting for a client’s wedding I had the opportunity this week to visit one of the newest wedding facilities in Metro Vancouver, the UBC Boathouse. Located on River Road in Richmond, the Boathouse is an eclectic structure that mixes modern architecture with graceful flourishes.
The $6-million building opened in 2006 to house UBC’s rowing club as well as to serve as a training facility for Olympic hopefuls. It’s also a venue for group functions, including weddings. Stretching out into the Fraser River, the Boathouse is a fabulous blend of nature and the high life, literally. You can stand on the concrete walkway and watch planes taking off from YVR while eagles circle above the water’s edge.
I think it’s a truly unique place to celebrate your wedding and I’m looking forward to photographing there for the first time in a few weeks.

Aiming for the Right Mix Between Candid and Formal Wedding Photographs
February 18, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Candid or formal?
Finding the perfect ratio between the two will be a topic you discuss with your wedding photographer. On one hand, candids are fun and free and capture life as we lived it. Formals, though, are more likely to provide the two or three images that you will want to have printed large and displayed prominently in your home.
So how do you ensure that you have a mix that works on your wedding day? First, you and your photographer need to make sure you’re on the same page about what you want. Most photographers excel in candid, or photojournalistic, photography because it relies almost entirely on their eye. They will have an on-camera flash (and ideally a stand-up strobe to provide cross-lighting at your reception) but the key to candid photography is more about instinct than technical understanding of the craft.
Formals require high-end lighting equipment as well as patience from all involved. That also means adequate time needs to be set aside for a photograph session. If you’re using a wedding planner, she or he will likely allot about 90 minutes between the ceremony and the reception for formals. That may not be enough time, depending on how long it takes to get to each location. If your formal photograph session includes parents, grandparents, other close relatives and a bridal party of four or more couples you can be looking at more than two hours to get all the photographs on the checklist.
What I suggest is keep things simple.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Vancouver!
February 14, 2008 | Leave a Comment

“Pure is the white rose/ In the compost earth/ growing eternal strength/ in the nights that so hurt” (poem by Edgar Allan Poe)
Happy Valentine’s Day from Julia Pelish Photography. I hope you got roses, chocolates, teddy bears, and/or something sparkly and shiny, like an engagement ring!
Here are some fun facts I found on Valentine’s Day that I thought you might enjoy:
- More than 90 million roses were delivered today in North America
- The most popular rose given is the “Signature Rose” - which is defined as a long-stemmed, dethorned red rose surrounded by baby’s breath
- 192 million greeting cards are exchanged today
- Who receives the most Valentine’s? Teachers
- As we told you a couple of days ago, more engagement rings are purchased in February than in any other month
- More than $62 million in jewelry will be spent for Valentine’s Day gifts.

Photographing Pets Has Its Charm and Its Challenges
February 12, 2008 | 2 Comments

Heeeeeeere’s Bingo! (Photo by Julia Pelish)
All professional photographers know that sometimes you get lucky with a shoot. That was the case recently when I photographed this frisky terrier in Kitsilano. His name’s Bingo and he isn’t one to usually sit still. But with enough patience and some treats we were able to keep him steady long enough under our lights to get several nice shots.
Pets, of course, present unique challenges. When you’re indoors and have all your studio equipment at your disposal you can come up with high-quality images. That said, I always prefer to photograph dogs in their element, which is outside, on a beach or in a park with their owners. With our Vancouver weather, though, that’s not always going to happen! So you have to be prepared to adjust, which actually can be said for just about any photographic endeavour.

Signature Portraits - Coming Soon!
February 11, 2008 | 1 Comment

Kitsilano-based artist Sally Gooding. (Signature Portrait by Julia Pelish)
Very soon - hopefully this week - I’ll be introducing my new product line called Julia Pelish Signature Portraits. I’ve been working on mastering this technique during the past several months. The technique incorporates studio photography in combination with a number of digital design tools, including several newly released plug-ins and updated versions of standard software. I wanted to focus on evolving portrait photography for my clients with the texture and beauty of collaging, an aspect of art I have worked on for years. I believe this technique marries classic portraiture with contemporary digital advancements. The aim was to combine as best I can my photography, digital design skills and creativity to take portrait photographs toward the fine-art sphere of things rather than the more journalistic end, which is generally a straight interpretation of a moment.
The above portrait took about 50 hours’ worth of work to complete following the photography session. I’d love to know what you think. You can leave a comment on this site or email me with your thoughts.
Thanks for visiting!

Valentine’s Day Is Coming and Engagement Portraits Will Soon Follow
February 8, 2008 | Leave a Comment

First comes love then comes engagement then comes photographs before your marriage!
In the coming weeks, I expect to receive many inquiries for wedding photography as girlfriends become fiancées. Did you know more engagement rings are sold in February than in any other month in North America? That’s according to Wedding News Wire and doesn’t surprise me at all. After those rings find fingers on Valentine’s Day each year, people in the wedding business, myself included, get crazy busy.
Even more so these days because engagement portraits are suddenly trendy. While engagement portraits are nothing unusual, how couples use those photographs is evolving. With so many people updating their personal blogs and social-networking web pages, engagement portraits are an increasingly popular keepsake.
Not only that, some romantic men have even gone so far as to hire their own personal paparazzi to capture the moment when they drop down to one knee to pop the question. They don’t want to lose that look when she says, “Yes!”

Candid moments and formal engagement portraits often join old baby pictures and school photos in the popular DVDs that are presented during the wedding reception. I also give my clients the choice of displaying their engagement portrait at their receptions in wider mattes and frames, allowing for best wishes and signatures to go around their photo, thus taking the place of the traditional guestbook.

The Chronicles of Baby Angelina – A Valentine’s Day Sweetheart for Vancouver
February 5, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Baby Angelina has her first Valentine’s Day to look forward to. (Photo by Julia Pelish)
As reported a couple of weeks ago, Baby Angelina had her first photography session in January. Her mom and dad, Rosa and Herman, say she has grown very fast during these past two weeks and is sleeping much better. With her grandmother visiting from overseas, Angelina has been getting spoiled with attention.
Angelina’s first Valentine’s Day is approaching and we know she can look forward to receiving plenty of hearts this year and in the many more to follow.
Mom and Dad are busy filling in their picture frames with the photographs from Angelina’s portrait shoot. Angelina’s baby portraits have also been retouched, enhanced and stylized to be part of my Signature Portrait collection, which will debut next week when my website relaunches.

Sometimes a Picture Alone Can Make You Feel Relaxed

Thinking of a Caribbean getaway? (Photo by Julia Pelish)
Dreaming of somewhere warm and sunny?
Me, too.
Maybe this photo will ease your suffering in the cold and rain (and whatever snow’s left over). I photographed it during a vacation to St. Maarten in the Caribbean. It’s a friendly island with exquisite beaches, including this one. Few people were on at this time of day, which made photographing and relaxing easy. The big ship in the distance is one of the many yachts and schooners that called St. Maarten home. There were also several cruiseliners that came into port for the cheap shopping, which is mostly centered around jewelry.
View my travel photo galleries and maybe you’ll spot something that makes you think of escape.
Hopefully we’ll get some sunshine this week (like the forecast claims).
