Photographing Pets Has Its Charm and Its Challenges

Heeeeeeere’s Bingo! (Photo by Julia Pelish)

All professional photographers know that sometimes you get lucky with a shoot. That was the case recently when I photographed this frisky terrier in Kitsilano. His name’s Bingo and he isn’t one to usually sit still. But with enough patience and some treats we were able to keep him steady long enough under our lights to get several nice shots.

Pets, of course, present unique challenges. When you’re indoors and have all your studio equipment at your disposal you can come up with high-quality images. That said, I always prefer to photograph dogs in their element, which is outside, on a beach or in a park with their owners. With our Vancouver weather, though, that’s not always going to happen! So you have to be prepared to adjust, which actually can be said for just about any photographic endeavour.

  1. Ohh.. I love photos of pets! I even had a photo of my Pembroke Welsh put on a canvas print. I took it while he was sleeping. Man, was that hard. Your dog is really adorable! I love Yorkies.
